Book Promo: Asylum by Dana Wright

Blurb:
In the shadows of the heart, love is the greatest refuge.
Rachel Winestock is in a bad spot. She needs to get her Nana out of an abysmal assisted living center no ifs, ands, or buts about it. With the help of her demon cat Thickety, she agrees to put her ghost-hunting mettle back to the test after a horrific accident nearly claimed the life of her best friend. Ghosts are drawn to Rachel, and like her Nana says, with any great gift comes a great responsibility.
Matt Rutledge suffers no fool lightly—especially frauds who prey on the weak and grieving. A professional reality show host, he's seen his fair share of bad apples. One look at Rachel has him wondering just which side of the barrel she falls into. He knows there's something bad within the walls of Bremore Asylum. The voices of the past are alive behind the imposing iron gates. Now he just has to prove it.
When Rachel agrees to take the job investigating the disappearance of a fellow ghost hunter at Bremore Asylum, she is totally unprepared for the sexy and stubborn psychic debunker Matt Rutledge to be a part of the package. Can these two opposing forces, with the help of a very cranky demon cat, find the answers behind the asylum's crumbling walls before the asylum's grim history repeats itself?

CHAPTER ONE
Rachel Winestock quietly let herself into the room where her grandmother lay nestled under the sheets, the blankets swallowing her slender frame. Pale and shrunken, she was a frail shadow of what she had been months ago. Rachel smiled at the sound of her steady breathing and light snoring. Nana needed her rest and was stubborn about admitting it. Peering over at her wizened face, her grandmother’s lips appeared chapped.
Damn it. What do these people have against ChapStick?
It wasn’t fair. Nana appeared to be shrinking right before her eyes. Rachel had already lost her parents. She didn’t want to lose Nana too. It was too much. Especially after everything they’d been through over the last year. Tears pricked at the corners of her eyes and she fought against them. She had to be strong.
No.
If Nana woke up and found her crying, there would be hell to pay. Rachel sniffled and forced her emotions in check.
“She needs to get out of here.” Thickety blurted out, his shadowy form hidden in the dimness of the room. His long cat tail flicked his distain, and he edged his head toward Rachel. Red eyes glowed from his smoky black form that could be as solid or transparent as he needed it to be. “The smell is worse than a cat box.”
“Why do you insist on following me? Can’t you just leave well enough alone?” Rachel ground out, trying her hardest not to make eye contact with the demonic cat. He’d been in her life since she could remember and nowhere along the way had it ever been easy. “And I know that. Look at those bruises.”
“Hey. I’m doing you a solid here. You want to know where the missing bracelet is that used to be on her arm? I’d look at that attendant down the hall.”
“The last time I listened to you someone almost died.”
“Don’t you mean ignore? I told you the child was in the house, not to go poking into foundation walls with no structure to hold them up. There’s a difference, sweet cheeks.” Thickety raised his paw and licked at his foot. “Remember I was right. Just because your friend decided to get a little crazy with a mallet and found herself buried was not my fault.”
Rachel sucked in a breath and gritted her teeth. “Look. I came here to see my grandmother. Can we save the arguments for later?”
“Fine.” The cat yawned and crept closer, his eyes focused on Rachel’s Nana. “She used to be livelier than this. What are they feeding her?”

“I don’t know but whatever it is, it’s not enough. She looks terrible.” Weak and more fragile than she had ever seen her, Rachel had to do something to get her out of here. Even if that something was take a job working for Harold Danvers. The past was the past. It was easy to say that until the nightmares came, leaving her shaking in her bed covered in sweat.

EXCLUSIVE NEVER SEEN BEFORE EXCERPT:

One thick lock of bronze hair escaped the mass tied to her head. The length twisted past a full breast, beyond her navel, and just above a thatch of curly hair. There, he’d almost known her. Would she take him back? She’d haunted every one of his dreams, followed him like a wraith from London, to France, to Italy, the Holy Lands, and by God, back again. She would marry him. He’d insist. He cleared his throat and stepped out into the open on the lowest tier of bricks.
Eyes wide, her mouth dropped open, and she screeched. One arm covered both breasts and the other hand went low. “Thomas? Is that you? Haunt me not. Be gone. Damn you.”
He put melody to one of the hundreds of poems he’d composed as his lower appendage swelled for her. “Merry, Merry. So very ever fair-ye.”
“Good heavenly Father above. Now it sings?” She picked up a scrubbing brush lying beside a pile of her clothing. Fire from the hearth reflected red into her stunned eyes. Water sloshed over the edge of the highest pools onto the surface of the one below it. The lower edge of the middle bath did the same in perfect counterpoint.
He took a deep breath, jumped up three stairs, and opened his arms wide. “Nay a ghost, love. I’ve come back for you.”
A small nugget of soap whizzed by and would’ve grazed a cheek had he not stepped aside. She dropped to her knees with what he thought was a prayer, jostled in her belongings, and rose with the vicious edge of a dagger. She hissed and jabbed in his direction. “Nay. Be gone ghost. You can’t be Thomas. They said you were dead.”
“They? Who are they, dearest? There’s only I, your love. I’ve returned.” Three steps more brought him within an arm’s length. He reached forward with palms up.
With her un-daggered hand, she finger-poked him and her gray eyes went wider still. She paled when she hit solid mail under his tunic and for a moment their eyes locked like years ago and he was all but undone.

Excerpt

“So what’s the prognosis, doc?” Clearing my throat, “It’s getting worse, isn’t it?” Pouring some water into a bowl and handing it to me, “first, can you tell me what set you off in the training room with Leo? I’ve been doing some studying in the archives, and I may have a theory on why it’s progressing so quickly, but like I said, I need that information.” I stared into the bowl on my lap and once again wondered at the doc’s mental state. There was a perfectly good cup sitting next to the pitcher of water. And this is who my father trusts with my life. Shaking my head to clear out those thoughts, I told him what happened leading up to my collapse, leaving out Leo’s apparent interest in him. I had some digging to do later, and I wanted that information. If Leo wanted the demented man, I would do anything I could to make that happen, but first I had to figure out how to slow this thing down before it killed me. “Hmm, well, in my research, it says that carriers of the gene are only activated if a few things happen. One, your fertari must be approaching maturity. So, in essence, they must be at least eighteen, and since this started three years ago, I can guess an age of twenty-one. Second, it is possible, and let me stress how rare this possibility is, that this person may be your fated mate.” If he weren’t so crazy I would think the scrunched up face the doc was making was adorable. “Wait, what? Fated mate? Wow, doc, let’s take a step back. Are you sure that is even a possibility? I mean fated mates haven’t been heard of since before the war.”
Running his hands through is unruly hair, “Honestly, I can’t be one hundred percent certain about any of it. The scrolls were not clear about fated mates, since it was something that was just understood at the time. People lived hundreds of years then, so there was no need to record that information since they assumed, as preternatural creatures, they would be around.” The doctor slumped in the chair and looked totally defeated. It would’ve been the look of any defeated man if the doctor’s feet could touch the floor. It put me in the mindset of Alice in Wonderland. I couldn’t help but chuckle thinking about it. My chuckle turned into a full belly-laugh, until the doctor’s next words set in. “You’re laughing now, but the scrolls were sure about one thing. Once the mark appears, you will have one month to get pregnant, or die.” Suddenly, I couldn’t breathe. Standing up slowly, so as not to faint, I lifted my shirt to show my bare chest. “D-Do you mean this mark?” I whispered. I never knew before that moment that one simple nod would be enough to take my breath away.

EXCERPT

Eve of All Hallows - Teaser 3
I think I will enjoy my time here.
Very much.
I’m taking in that magnificent view while I swirl a glass of red wine. Sometimes a girl gets lucky. It’s well past midnight now, but I can’t sleep. Beyond the beauty of my surroundings, of the warmth on my skin this late in the year, is the sound of the sea. I am truly alone in my own little nirvana. No one knows where I am, and I don’t care.
There’s a flash of movement from the corner of my eye. Maybe I’m not as alone as I thought. My heart flutters a little. Then I see him walking the beach towards the water, under the great moon above. My magnificent view just got even more spectacular. He’s fully naked.
My attention is riveted now as I sip my wine. I can’t see a lot of detail in the darkness, but I can see he is tall, with long hair. Nicely built, and if my eyes don’t deceive me, well-endowed as well. Now, this is a very interesting development.
I watch as he enters the water, and I shiver just a little as if my own skin was touched by the cool waters. He disappears momentarily beneath the dark sea, and emerges, throwing back his long hair. I know I should look away, I should respect his privacy, but I cannot. I am a voyeur in my own little world.
I’m not really sure how much time I spend watching him. Perhaps only a few minutes, maybe even an hour. He emerges from the waves, a mere silhouette now in the moonlight. He stops and looks straight to me. My first reaction is to want to drop to the floor. But my mind tells me he cannot see me in the darkness.
So, if he cannot see me, why does he stare in my direction?

Vicki’s love of books and reading started when she was in high school. She had struggled with speech, spelling and reading her whole life until she turned 15 and an English teacher introduced her to the world of books and reading. From there, there was no stopping her. She started reading Mills and Boon books but soon moved on to historical romances. She now reads just about anything.
She started writing plays in high school but no one knew or ever read them. She then moved onto writing poetry when a life-changing event happened in her life. It was her way of dealing with it. After reading hundreds of books she decided that she had untold stories to tell and that is when she started writing books.
She is now living in Brisbane Australia with her husband and 5 of her 6 children (the eldest of the 6 is living on campus at a collage not far away), a cat and the baby of the family Pixie Diva, the much loved family dog.
