Joanne Jaytanie's Biography

I was born and raised in Sherburne, New York, a quaint village surrounded by dairy farms and rolling hills. From the moment I could read I wanted to explore the world. I slowly crept across the country, stopping along the way in Oklahoma, California, and finally Washington State, which I now proudly call home. I live with my husband and Dobermans, in our home located on the Kitsap Peninsula with a panoramic view of the Olympic Mountains.

I write paranormal and romantic suspense. I love writing about the twists and turns of my character’s lives, the trouble they find themselves involved in, along with building an everlasting relationship. I enjoy a wide variety of books including paranormal, suspense, thriller, and most of all romance.

I am a member of Romance Writers of America, and an active member of Debbie Macomber’s home chapter, Peninsula Romance Writers, where I currently serve as the President.

I have a Bachelors Degree in Business. I spent a number of years in business administration, thirteen of which involved owning our own forensic engineering firm. For the past 30 years I have trained and shown dogs.

I am very involved in the dog world. I have been the president of my local All-Breed Dog Club for a total of nine years. I was nominated as the first American Kennel Club Delegate for this club, and have held this position for nineteen years. I am a member of four other dog clubs and have served in a variety of board positions.

An Interview with Joanne Jaytanie

Your books focus on the paranormal and romantic suspense, what is it about these genres that inspire you as a writer?

Suspense has always been a draw for me. I love to immerse myself in a story, the suspense, tension, danger, and drama, are all pluses in my book. Throw in the paranormal element and you can create heroines and heroes that are larger than life. These two genres give me freedom and opportunity to go in any direction. I have the ability to intertwine a story that you, the reader are never one-hundred percent sure of where it may take you, and that’s what inspires me.

You have the Winter Sister Series and the Places to See Collection; can you tell readers about each?

The Winters Sisters Series is romantic suspense with paranormal elements. The series is about three sisters, all of whom have ‘special’ abilities that each were born with, but may not be natural. The main thrust of the series revolves around the sisters working with an élite group of military men called SOCOM, which stands for Special Operations Command. The men in this team also possess supernatural abilities. I have slated this series for five full-length novels, with a possible novella.

Uncharted Love is book #4 of the Places to See Collection. Which is a collection of short stories, each written by a different author. It is a contemporary romance series. Five friends have to deal with the death of another friend. That friend’s last request is that each woman takes a little time to enjoy life and go on a vacation. This is a very difficult thing for these women to do, as their lives revolve around their careers.

My newest release is also a short story, Building up to Love, book #4 of The Love List collection. This series is similar to Places to See in that it is written by different authors and has a common theme. It takes place in a small town. Four women become good friends and commiserate over the fact that they haven’t dated for awhile. They decide to pull their resources and drop some names of male friends into a basket. One by one the women draw the name of a man from the basket and must invite this man on a date.

Was writing something you always did or was it something you took up recently after having a business career?

I have written since my freshman year in high school.  I have always loved to write. After my husband and I decided to close down our forensic engineering firm I was lost, wondering what I should do with the rest of my life. I realized that it was the perfect opportunity to finally follow my passion.

I read that you like writing about the twists and turns for your characters. Many readers enjoy a good twist in a book. Is it hard coming up with different scenarios for your characters or do you already have an idea in mind of where you want the story to go when you start?

Twists and turns are my favorite part! When I start my book I have my basic story arc planned, but how I get to the end often changes along the way. If I feel something is too ‘straight line’ I will throw a curve into it. I love when someone says to me, “I didn’t see that coming.” That’s what I work for, to surprise the reader.

Out of all your books, do you have a favorite?

That’s a tough one. Definietly the Winters Sisters is my favorite. I’m not sure I have a favorite of the two. I love Chasing Victory because it is the first and set the premise of my series. I love Payton’s Pursuit because I feel it has more action.

Do you have any current works in progress that you can tell us about?

I am currently working on book #3 of the Winters Sisters. This is Willow’s book. I have also jotted down details and started the first couple chapters of book 4 and 5.

I just submitted my Christmas short story, Christmas Reflections. It is book #1 of the series Forever Christmas.

As an author what has been the best part about writing and publishing your books?

The best part is when a reader tells me they love my book and can’t wait for the next one! That has to be the all-time best part of writing. Sharing something that I love to write and having others love to read it.

Who are some of your favorite authors?

Clive Cussler
Sherrilyn Kenyon
Douglas Preston and Lincoln Child
Too many romance authors to name…

When you’re not writing, how do you like to spend your free time?

I like to spend time with my husband and my Dobermans. Take a walk, go camping, or just sitting out on my back porch. I love to read, work on stained glass, go to the movies and spend time with my family.

In 10 words or less can you tell readers why they should read your books?

This is not your mother’s romance…

Is there anything else you would like to say to your fans or readers who are new to you?

I hope you will give me a try. If you do, please tell me what you think. I love to meet and chat with new people.
